Here's what the teaser from last post was about - this coat. It didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, the hood is too small in the front... wearable, but she'll need a hat under the hood to cover up that poor exposed forehead. I blame the lack of availability of little heads to measure while drafting the pattern.
The fabric was painstakingly hand painted. Though, 'painted' is a bit of a misnomer. I used discharge paste, applied with a paintbrush. You can see on the upper left shoulder where I applied the paste twice to get a lighter effect but instead got a different colour. Live and learn. It still looks good. I like this technique because you a) don't see what you've got until you're finished painting and you iron it, and b) you're guaranteed a complementary colour scheme because it's just a shade of the original colour. The gold was a bit of a surprise, I was expecting something lighter. It's not something I would have chosen, but I still love it. The other benefit to this technique is the fabric retains the same hand as before the treatment - which you don't get with some paints or inks.
